Exploring Rome Print E-mail

Italy’s capital has a long and illustrious history. As the centre of the Roman Empire it was considered the world’s most powerful city; and, although its power may have waned, its appeal certainly hasn’t.

Thousands of UK tourists flock to Rome every year, taking advantage of cheap flights and package deals to see the Italian capital on a budget. Some companies, such as On The Beach, even offer late holidays with flights and accommodation included for as little as £250 per person. So, if you’re keen to take advantage of low prices to explore Rome, here are some of the sights you simply can’t miss.

The Colosseum
Undoubtedly the world’s most famous amphitheatre, the Colosseum features in hundreds of accounts of ancient Rome as a place of power struggles, bloody battles and miraculous victories. See the places where gladiators fought wild beasts, admire the views from the top seats, and have your photo taken with a centurion dressed in full regalia.

The Pantheon
Another enduring reminder of ancient Roman history, the Pantheon is one of the city’s best preserved historical buildings. It was built by the Emperor Hadrian in 119AD in order to honour all of the gods, and is perhaps most noted for its central dome which is considered to be a feat of ancient architecture.

The Vatican
A state within itself, Vatican City is a visual feast of art and architecture. Its museums house one of the most impressive collections of Renaissance Art in the world, and its famed buildings include St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. If you can handle the climb, St Peter’s Dome offers outstanding views of Both the Vatican and of Rome.

Via Condotti
It may not be a sight to rival the Colosseum or the Pantheon, but for modern tourists the Via Condotti holds an equal appeal. It is the centre of Rome’s shopping district, showcasing the shop fronts of the world’s premier designers. In the surrounding side streets, shoppers will find quirkier local designers and smaller chic boutiques.

Via di Monte Testaccio
When the sun goes down over Rome it’s time to party, and where better to strut your stuff than on the Via di Monte Testaccio? House, dance, electronica and salsa music are all on offer in this street’s hip clubs – it’s the perfect place to end your night after a hard day of sightseeing in Italy’s capital.
