Fancy a holiday off the beaten track and away from the madding crowds? If you’re keen for a spot of adventure which won’t break the bank, Italy could be your perfect destination. From skiing on towering peaks to rafting on foaming rivers, the country has plenty to offer thrill-seekers year-round. Here are a few of the best Italian adventures on offer.

Kayaking

For those keen to see the famously beautiful Italian countryside by water, kayaking is the way to go. A great area to explore by boat or by kayak is the Tremiti Islands; an archipelago clustered just of the coast near Gargano. Paddle through the serene blue waters, taking a break to pick Indian figs or sample olives in the islands’ dense bush, then get your diving gear out to explore the Roman shipwreck off Zio Cesare Point. It’s an adventure that’s perfect for all the family, and a great way to discover Italy.  

Skiing

The Italian ski resorts offer some of the best snow conditions in the world, and a myriad of lively resorts are there to facilitate your experience of the slopes. The Piemonte Region was the home of the 2006 winter Olympics and is a great family destination, but for those more serious about skiing, Cortina is a perfect destination. Renowned for its Alpine slopes and cross country ski opportunities, the are boasts fifty two lifts and 140 kilometres of downhill trails, as well as 130 kilometres of cleared cross country tracks. You can also snow-raft or enjoy other adrenaline sports at the Cortina ‘No Limits Centre’.

Caving

For a real adrenaline rush, try caving underneath the wild Maiella Plateau. Both experienced and amateur cavers will love the huge Cavallone cave, only reachable by climbing 200 stairs carved into sheer rock. Once you’re up there, Cavallone offers two kilometres of narrow passages, dark passages, majestic halls and underground lakes to explore.

Trekking

With its varied terrain, which includes everything from soaring mountains to pristine beaches, Italy is a mecca for serious walkers. Once of the country’s most famous trails is the Alta Via, which stretches from Ventimiglia on the French border all the way to Spezia. Its 300 kilometres navigates 2,000 metre sheer drops, runs through beach and chestnut forests, winds through meadows, and passes over barren wastelands. 

 

The best bit about taking your adventure holiday in Italy is that it won’t cost you the world. Budget airlines fly to major international airports like Rome, Naples and Milan, and companies like On The Beach offer deals on late holidays to the country. So, for an adventurous break during the credit crunch, you need look no further.
