Pisa travel guide

Pisa, situated on the fertile Arno River valley, used to be a roman port and one of the Italian maritime republics. Today Pisa is no longer on the sea, but is a vibrant young city with many renowned universities and millions of tourists that come every year to see the leaning tower, which is its main attraction. Situated on Miracle square, with its 294 steps, the leaning tower reopened in 2001 after long works of consolidation. Standing at the bottom it really looks like it is about to turn over any moment, superstitious students won’t attempt to climb the tower before the end of their studies as it is believed those who do won’t graduate. Still on Miracle Square, the Cathedral and the Baptistery are fine examples of the Romanesque style. The city is compact with picturesque narrow cobbled streets opening onto lovely little squares with colourful markets and the river banks called “Lungarno” lined with elegant buildings are a real invitation to walk or cycle everywhere. As well as the historical and art monuments Pisa offers a selection of events such as the Music Festival, the Great Historical Boat Race and the “Luminara”, a fantastic candle-lit procession along the Arno river banks on the 16th of June, the eve of the Patron celebrations.
