Napoleon once derided the English as a nation of shopkeepers. This quote, lifted from Adam Smith, may have been true in years gone by, but the English are now a nation of property investors. There has never been a greater emphasis in the UK on owning ones home. This is arguably a result of more than a decade of Margaret Thatcher's policies including the selling-off of leased council houses. The result is an ageing nation hooked on property investment. Of course, the other outcome is a property market inaccessible to young people or those on comparatively low wages, such as public sector workers. One option that both the wealthy and the less wealthy are looking at in increasing numbers is purchasing a home overseas, where British money goes a lot further and, in many cases, life is better.

Britain's wealthy are among the keenest investors in property in Dubai. The Emirate State is a playground for the world's super rich, with a selection of residents and homeowners that looks like a Who's Who of modern celebrity. Fancy living on the next island to Rod Stewart? You can do it in Dubai. Keen to see how the England team conduct themselves abroad (not including on the football pitch, of course) - Dubai's your place.

If you wish to live the high life on a more modest budget, Brazil could be worth checking out. Investment property in Brazil is on everyone's lips right now and it's little wonder. The country is enjoying a period of stability as Latin America booms, making it a more attractive proposition for Western investment. The big cities such as Sao Paolo and Rio are popular spots, while Salvador is significantly closer to the Equator and the only place in Brazil where you can watch the sun set out at sea.

Somewhat closer to the UK, property investment in Morocco has been steadily increasing over recent years as Brits look outside of traditional European destinations to spend their money. Marrakech attracts the majority of investment and some stunning properties can be found in the city. Less that half a million Pounds can buy an old palace in the city, which is more than can be said for london, where that sum would secure you a reasonable one bedroom flat in some parts of town.

In Southern Europe, Bulgaria seems to be the place on everyone's lips. Property is comparatively cheap and the country has some of the best year-round weather on the continent. The quality of investment property in Bulgaria is variable, so it is highly recommended that you do thorough research before buying a place there. The same is true of investment property in Romania, where some people have had difficulties with the quality of property in which they invest.

Investing in property overseas can be both enjoyable and financially rewarding, if done at the right time and with a professional outlook. If possible, you should discuss the business with someone experienced before undertaking your first investment.
