Where to ski in Italy Print E-mail

Whether you’re looking for pristine powder or hair-raising off-piste runs, Italy is a great place to ski. Here’s a selection of destinations with appeal for all the family.

Piemonte

The Piemonte Region of Italy hosted the winter Olympics in 2006; and, as you might expect, has some fantastic runs which cater to all tastes and abilities. With 53 resorts and 1,300 kilometres of piste to choose from, you’ll be sure to find something to your taste.

Courmayeur

Known as the ‘Chamonix of Italy’, Cormayer is a pretty little Alpine village on the Italian side of Mont Blanc. The resort itself offers plenty of opportunities for shopping, eating and drinking, while the 16 ski lifts deliver skiers and snowboarders to some of the country’s best intermediate slopes.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

If you have the cash to splash and fancy a particularly luxurious ski holiday, Cortina d’Ampezzo should be your number one choice. This exclusive resort is nestled amongst the Italian Dolomites approximately 451 kilometres from Milan-Malpensa Airport, and boasts 47 ski lifts to slopes suitable mainly for beginners and intermediates. The village itself is home to a museum and an art gallery, as well as the usual ski resort attractions.

Abruzzo

Looking to combine a cultural trip to Rome with a few days of skiing? If so, Abruzzo is a great option. With snow to rival the Alps and 368 kilometres of runs, the region is popular for downhill and cross-country skiing as well as other winter sports. The most developed ski resort is Roccaraso, which has 64 trails and 29 lifts.

Cervinia

Located at the base of the Matterhorn close to the famous Swiss resort of Zermatt, Cervinia is a good and inexpensive place to ski. The village is easily accessible and boasts a casino, swimming pool, movie theatre and skating rink, as well as access to one of the longest runs in the world. Advanced skiers also have the option of heading over to Zermatt for some more challenging slopes.
